# What is Numerology and How Does it Work?

Do you have an affinity for a certain number or numbers? What is for favourite number? It could be no coincidence that you have an attraction for that digit. Your birth date and your name can all influence who you are and what your purpose is for your life. That is what numerology is in a snapshot. But what exactly is numerology? How did it start and what can numerology do for you?

__It’s all about numbers__

Numerology considers that numbers carry a mystical relationship between you and your personality, traits and your destiny. It’s not a new concept, having a history that extends back to ancient Egypt and Babylonia, numbers have always been considered to carry a magical property in them. The modern use of numerology in the west is based on the Pythagorean system, created by the Greek mathematician, Pythagoras but it’s by no means the only system found in numerology.

__Pythagorean numerology__

Pythagoras assigned numbers to each letter of the Greek alphabet. Your date of birth and your name were given an overall numerical value which then was interpreted to reveal your nature, your life’s destiny and the relationship between these numbers. Here is the system of Pythagorean numerology (you’ll learn how to use it later):

__Chaldean numerology__

This is a system that is older than that of the Pythagorean one having its basis with the Chaldeans who were inhabitants of ancient Babylonia. The difference between the Pythagorean system and Chaldean numerology is that the Chaldeans didn’t use the number 9 in their numerology. 9 was considered a sacred number, therefore was excluded from the system. Its emphasis is on the shift in energy that occurs when someone speaks or thinks. The Chaldean numerological system looks like this:

**Kabbalah Numerology**

The Kabbalah system is a mix of Gematria (an ancient Jewish system of number interpretation) and Pythagorean numerology. The calculator used is the same as that in the Pythagorean system. The purpose of Kabbalah numerology is to help you connect with your inner-self and discover your life purpose. The difference with this system is that it only uses your name in its calculation.

Though there are several more systems used in numerology these are the main three that you will find in use with the major one (and the one used in the rest of this article) being system created by Pythagoras.

But what does numerology actually do? Numerology uses the vibration and frequencies of numbers to give you an insight into who you are and what your life purpose is. The main numbers that are given the significance in Western numerology are those based on your date of birth (your “Life Path Number”) and your name (your “Destiny Number”).

__Time to find meaning __

Now that you are familiar with the different systems used in numerology (in Western numerology, though the major system is that created by Pythagoras, you may find a cross over between the different systems) its time to find out who to use them.

__Breaking down the numbers__

The calculation in numerology reduces numbers down to the single digits 1-9. There are “Master Numbers” in numerology which are 11, 22, 33 (if calculation results in a master number, then you don’t break this number down further). The master numbers are seen to carry great power due to the doubling of the figures. If your birth date or name result in a master number, you are seen to possess greater psychic potential, intuition or intellect than others (that doesn’t mean you should become egotistical).

The two main numbers we are going to look at are:

**⦁ Your Life Path Number**

**⦁ Your Destiny Numbe**r

Though both these numbers are calculated the same way, the resulting number carries a different meaning between them. For the calculations, we will use a fictitious date of birth: **21 / 7 / 1967** to calculate a Life Number and a fake name: **Wendy Melody Daniels **to work out a Destiny Number (note that you use your full name when working out your Destiny Number).

**The Life Path Number**

The date of your birth may seem like some random event, but in fact, it was a predetermined event that was arranged between you and your spirit team in the spiritual realm before your incarnation into human life. By adding together the numbers of your date of birth will result in your Life Path Number.

The Life Path Number indicates the challenges and lessons that you have to learn during this life. It is what you have chosen to experience through your life journey as well as the strengths, weakness and your ambitions. By becoming aware of these means that you are better equipped to fulfil the destiny you have assigned yourself and can gain greater clarity of the meaning behind the past and present experiences you have.

To calculate your Life Path Number, simply add together the numbers in your birth date. Let’s calculate Wendy’s Life Path Number. Wendy was born on 21/7/1967:

__How to calculate your Life Path Number __

⦁ (Day) 2 + 1 = **3**

⦁ (Month) 7 = **7**

⦁ (Year) 1 + 9 + 6 + 7 = 23 (Add the double digits together to get a single digit) 2 + 3 = **5**

⦁ Add together the single digits you arrived at from the day, month and year of your birthdate: 3 + 7 + 5 = 15 (Add the double digits together to get a single digit) 1 + 5 = **6**

⦁ The final figure is your Life Path Number.

In this example, we find that by adding together the numbers from Wendy’s birthdate she has a Life Path Number of 6.

**Your Destiny Number **

The Destiny Number (also referred to as your Expression Number) highlights your personal goals and desires and how the talents, strengths and weaknesses you possess (which you discovered through your Life Path Number) enables you to achieve your life mission. To work out your Destiny Number you need to assign each letter of your full name a number using this calculator (it’s the Pythagorean one):

Here is how Wendy can find out her Destiny Number using her full name **Wendy Melody Daniels:**

**W = 5**

**E = 5**

**N = 5**

**D = 4**

**Y = 7**

**M = 4**

**E = 5**

**L = 3**

**O = 6**

**D = 4**

**Y = 7**

**D = 4**

**A = 1**

**N = 5**

**I = 9**

**E = 5**

**L = 3 **

**S = 1**

Now that we have numbers assigned to each letter of the name, it’s time to add them together:

5 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 7 = 26

4 + 5 + 3 + 6 + 4 + 7 = 29

4 + 1 + 5 + 9 + 5 + 3 + 1 = 28

Remember, we need to reduce the double digits to single numbers so we have to add the numbers of 26, 29 and 28 together and keep adding the double figures together until we get to a single figure:

2 + 6 = **8**

2 + 9 = 11 (add the two “1s” together as it is a double-digit number) 1 + 1 = **2**

2 + 8 = 10 (reduce the double-digit number to a single number) 1 + 0 = **1**

Now we add the sum of the above calculation together:

8 + 2 + 1 = **11 **

Oh, look at that we just arrived at one of the three master numbers (11, 22, 33) so we stop calculating. If the result wasn’t a master number and still a double-digit figure we would have to keep adding until we arrived at a single number (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9).

**The numbers give you an overview**

Now you have your Life Path Number and Destiny Number, don’t think that they are independent. The numbers, though highlighting different aspects of you and your life, work in harmony with one another to show you how your personality and traits can help you achieve your life’s purpose as well as those parts of you and your life that you need to work on. Yes, the numbers show you the positive and the negative. That’s a part of personal growth and development.

**More numbers**

Though the Life Path Number and Destiny Number are the main numbers that numerology focuses on there are still a couple of extra numbers that you can calculate to learn more about yourself.

**Your Personality Number**

There are some parts of ourselves that we readily display and others that we hide. Your personality number brings to light the part of your personality that you may not be aware that you are hiding. It allows you to analyse yourself and see where you need to change.

To calculate your Personality Number, take the consonants of your full name and add the figures together. Once you have a result, __go and find out what it reveals about you.__

**Your Birthdate Number**

This isn’t to be confused with your Life Path Number, though your Birthdate Number can reveal aspects about your personality and traits similar to your Life Path Number. Your Birthdate Number can be used with the other numbers you have arrived at in order to gain a deeper and more profound insight into who you are.
